DISCOVERER aims for operating smaller,
lighter and cheaper Earth Observation
satellites at much lower altitudes than usual
achieving higher resolution.

DISCOVERER is a project aimed to radically develop new technologies and techniques to achieve the long-term vision of VLEO EO platforms. In order to carry out this project, DISCOVERER will try to use a combination of new aerodynamic materials, aerodynamic control and atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion for drag-compensation. These next generation satellites would be smaller, less massive and less expensive to launch, would still achieve the same or even better resolution and data products than today’s platforms.

This would reduce the cost of European programmes for maritime surveillance, intelligence and security, precision agriculture and food security, land management and disaster monitoring, as well as giving Europe a world leading role in the development and exploitation of these technological capabilities.

Elecnor Deimos, through Deimos Satellite Systems subsidiary, contributes with the design of the spacecraft platform and with the technology review, system requirements and system specification at space system integrator level. In addition, the company will be responsible of the analysis of the state of the art, business activities and exploitation roadmap related to the specific technologies and operations for flying in VLEO orbits. It will also take part in dissemination of the project.
Deimos Satellite Systems will provide qualified, experienced personnel, scientific professionals and facilities for the integration and functional testing of the system.

DISCOVERER aims to develop the key technologies required to master the engineering challenges of this cutting-edge project.
